Solar loan comparison

Not all solar loans are the same. The dealer fee is the primary variable.

GoodLeap and Dividend are active. Mosaic and Sunnova are not. Every lender carries a dealer fee of 19 to 35 percent, which adds $4,500 to $8,400 to a $24,000 system. We show it in dollar terms.

Common questions

Questions about solar loans in 2026

What should I compare when looking at solar loan lenders?

The most important comparison is the 25-year true cost, not the monthly payment or APR alone. A loan with a 25 percent dealer fee has a financed amount of $30,000 on a $24,000 system. A HELOC at a higher stated APR but no dealer fee may cost less over 25 years. Compare financed amount, total interest paid, and any prepayment penalties -- not just the stated rate.

Are GoodLeap and Dividend Finance safe to use in 2026?

Both are active for new originations. Both are named in the Minnesota AG dealer-fee lawsuit (2024, ongoing). Dividend is also named in a federal MDL class action. These are active legal proceedings, not resolved cases. We disclose this to every customer before recommending either lender and show the dealer-fee structure in dollar terms.

Can I still get a federal tax credit with a solar loan in 2026?

No. The Section 25D residential solar credit expired December 31, 2025. A homeowner who takes out a solar loan in 2026 receives no federal residential credit. The effective loan cost is the full financed amount, including any dealer fee, plus interest.

What happened to Mosaic Solar?

Mosaic Solar filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the Southern District of Texas on June 9, 2025. New originations stopped before the filing. Existing Mosaic loans were transferred to Solar Servicing LLC. Mosaic is not available for new installations.
